Case Work

Why do we need to tackle financial crime?

Money laundering constitute 2 to 5 percent world’s GDP, approximately $3 trillion to $5 trillion per year.

Organized crime takes in over $3 trillion per year, which is twice all military annual budgets combined.

50% of all medication purchased online is fake resulting in estimated $200 billion of illicit income per year.

Trade-Based Money Laundering: US$2 Trillion per year. Actual funds frozen: 0.01% of total (source: Asia Development Bank 2018).

Human Trafficking US$150 Billion and 24.9 million victims per year (ILO). Convictions for trafficking: 9,071 globally.

Financial Crime is prosperous - Mainstream detection technology is ancient
Tobacco smuggling
We uncovered details on how illicit tobacco was entering a country severely damaging the market share of legitimate manufacturers.
With the help of AMALIA we were able to track down the origins of the shipment, shipping routes and entities involved in enabling the operations. A suspicious activity report (SAR) was shared with the client.

Unfair Competition
We were hired by a global manufacturer to understand how in one of their regional markets local players were abusing the government policies.
Upon investigation we discovered multiple avenues of money laundering and related companies in tax havens. A probable money laundering scheme involving multiple entities and offshore accounts was shared with the client.

Illicit Markets
We investigated illicit market activity for a manufacturer with the purpose of shutting down the trade ring.
We identified the parties responsible for production, distribution, marketing and their cross border market activities. The approximate value of proceeds recovered was worth $300 million.

Business Partner fraud
We were appointed by a law firm to investigate money laundering committed by one of their client's business partners. Their client had accounting irregularities and asked us to investigate the location of the funds.
We discovered a parallel network in an off-shore tax haven and were able to identify a large scale financial crime committed by the business partner.

Money laundering through capital markets
We prepared and digitized typologies of money laundering through capital markets.
The algorithms detected 7 types of high profile money laundering methods which criminals used to illegally and easily move millions of dollars through banks.

Counterfeit medication
We traced counterfeit medication sales activities to identify the final beneficiaries of the illicit funds.
We followed the trading route and established all the parties involved. We investigated their online sales portals and established the recipients of the funds.

Government kleptocracy
We helped a government agency to investigate a case of corruption. We identified the key methods used to commit the crime and followed the trail of the illicit goods import and export.
We were able to establish the source players, the chief money launderer and the key recipients.

Wildlife crime
We helped a non-government organisation (NGO) to identify the real reason why thousands of elephants were killed and their ivory sold. The container that was hijacked from a reputable company was later filled with ivory. Building on the on-the-ground investigation, we ran all names identified in the case through our databases.
We identified that the witness of the container packing process had links to terrorism.
